What do you do if you’ve been dieting and exercising, but you still have a spot or two that just won’t shape up? For years, traditional liposuction was the answer. But today there’s an advanced version of lipo that offers patients a faster recovery and even better results. Smart Lipo is one of the many treatments offered at Soulage Wellness and Aesthetic Center in Bastrop, TX.
Understanding Smart Lipo
This version of lipo is a minimally invasive treatment that contours the body by addressing the trouble spots patients have been wrestling with. Maybe it’s just a little extra fullness in the thighs or an abdomen that isn’t as flat as you want it to be. Smart Lipo, which is also referred to as Laser Lipo, can help get those small, stubborn areas under control and give you the figure you’ve been working towards. This treatment doesn’t remove a lot of fat, but it’s enough to give you amazing results.
During treatment, a small tube known as a cannula is inserted into the area of concern on the body. The tube has a laser tip, and as it is fanned back and forth, it melts fat cells in the area and siphons them out. The subtle heat the laser generates also spurs collagen production, which leaves the skin in the treatment area tighter and smoother. That collagen production also ensures that once the fat has been removed, loose skin is not left behind.
What’s the Difference Between Lipo and Smart Lipo?
Both traditional and Laser Lipo help patients achieve their cosmetic goals by siphoning fat out of the body through a cannula. But Laser Lipo is a more sophisticated version of the treatment that’s easier on the patient and offers more refined results. It has largely replaced traditional lipo, which was once considered the gold standard for fat removal, as the treatment of choice. Here are some of the key advantages Laser Lipo offers over traditional lipo:
Because of a difference in the way the two treatments are performed, Laser Lipo can offer patients an easier, faster recovery. Laser Lipo liquefies the targeted fat cells, making them easy to extract from the body.
Traditional liposuction, because there is no laser heat involved, uses suction and physical manipulation to extract fat. The cannula used in traditional liposuction is also larger. Of the two, Laser Lipo is the more minimally invasive and tends to be an easier treatment overall for the patient, leading to a speedier recovery and less downtime.
The skin tightening benefit associated with Laser Lipo is something that traditional liposuction does not offer. This feature is especially beneficial to older patients whose skin may be losing elasticity.
More Refined Results
The heat, technique, and technology involved in Laser Lipo also make it easier to offer patients more refined results. The boundaries of the patient’s target area, for example, can be more easily smoothed so the difference between treated and non-treated areas is not noticeable. The technique involved in Laser Lipo gives the practitioner better and easier control over the treatment and its results.
How It Works
This minimally invasive treatment is performed under anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The treatment itself may take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. Most patients spend two or three days resting and taking it easy after their treatment and then head back to work. This is also a one-and-done treatment, so one Laser Lipo treatment is all most patients need.
What Areas of Concern Can Be Addressed?
This versatile treatment can be used to address areas of unwanted fat all over the body. The thighs, abdomen, flanks, buttocks, back, and upper arms are all common treatment targets. Smaller, tighter areas like the neck can also be treated.
When Will I Start to See Improvement?
You’ll see some noticeable results almost immediately after your treatment. Most of the fat cells are siphoned out of the body during the treatment, but additional cells will gradually drain away in the next few months. Patients usually see their full results by about six months after treatment.
Are the Results Permanent?
This treatment directly removes fat cells from the body, and those fat cells will be permanently gone. Of course, Laser Lipo won’t prevent you from gaining weight in the future, so the best way to preserve your results will be to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a careful diet.
How Much Weight Will I Lose?
You may lose a very modest amount of weight, but the true success of this treatment is measured not by the pounds or inches lost, but by the more contoured look the body takes on. This treatment is all about sculpting the body by removing just enough fat to restore contour and definition. It’s important to remember that this is not a weight-loss treatment. If shedding a certain number of pounds is your goal, a more traditional weight-loss plan may be more appropriate for you.
Does This Treatment Fight Cellulite?
Cellulite usually forms when fat develops around the fibrous cords that run between the skin and the underlying muscle. As pressure builds on those fibrous cords, they tug at the skin from beneath, resulting in a dimpled appearance.
Although Laser Lipo does remove fat cells and can sometimes help ease the appearance of cellulite, it is not a proven way to address this skin condition. If cellulite is one of your primary concerns, our practice offers Venus Legacy, a treatment that can tighten skin, smooth lines, and address cellulite.
Are There Any Special Requirements After Treatment?
We often ask patients who have undergone Laser Lipo to wear a compression garment for one to two weeks after treatment. This snug-fitting garment will be worn over the treatment area to speed recovery and help the skin conform to the body’s new shape.
Is This Treatment Safe?
Smart Lipo won approval from the FDA in 2006. This treatment has been safely used on men and women all over the country in the years since. It works on all body types and tones.
Who Will Oversee My Treatment?
Your treatment will be overseen by our Medical Director, Dr. Pompeyo Chavez. Dr. Chavez finished his post-graduate training at UTMB Galveston and served as Chief Resident of the Family Residency Program.
He has undergone additional training in the application of laser and light-based technologies on the skin, as well as in-depth training in aesthetics through the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.
Am I a Candidate?
To find out if you’re a good candidate for this treatment, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with our practice. During that appointment, we will review your medical history, evaluate your area of concern, and talk with you about your cosmetic goals. We’ll work with you to decide if Laser Lipo is the best route for you, but here are a few early signs that you may be a good candidate for this treatment:
You Just Need a Little Help Toning Up
The best Laser Lipo patients are actually in pretty good shape and are at or near their goal weight, but they need some help pushing past a problem spot or two. This treatment won’t help you lose a lot of weight, but it will help you slim down an area or two of concern. Ideally, Laser Lipo patients have maintained a consistent weight for a year or more and are no more than 30 pounds overweight.
You’re in Good Health
The ideal Laser Lipo patient is in pretty good overall health and doesn’t have underlying medical conditions like liver disease, coronary artery disease, or bleeding disorders. Patients who are taking Coumadin or Heparin are generally not candidates for this treatment. And patients who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding are asked to postpone treatment.
Your Skin Still Has Some Elasticity
The heat associated with Laser Lipo does naturally tighten the treatment area, but it still helps if the patient has some degree of skin elasticity. Elastic skin is more easily able to adjust to the body’s new shape.
The best patients understand this treatment and are realistic about the results they’ll get. Our patients are generally thrilled with the sleek, contoured silhouette they have after this treatment, but they don’t look 18 again.
You’re Ready to Feel Great About Your Body
Many of the patients we work with have been eating right and working out for years, but there’s always been a spot or two that they’ve struggled with. This treatment helps them push past that problem.
In some ways, the benefits offered by a body contouring treatment like Laser Lipo are even better than what can be achieved with a weight loss plan. When patients lose weight, they tend to lose it uniformly all over the body. Laser Lipo allows you to rein in the curves you’re unhappy with while keeping the ones you like.
You Don’t Want a One-Size-Fits-All Treatment
Laser Lipo treatments can be customized to the needs and desires of each patient, as well as his or her body. Some individuals want to remove as much fat as possible for noticeable results, while others want a more modest smoothing of a problem area.
We can also incorporate other services into your overall treatment plan. Botulinum toxin injections, dermal fillers, and photo rejuvenation are all popular treatments that Laser Lipo patients also seek out. Before your treatment, we’ll talk with you about your goals, what can be achieved, and what treatments should be considered.
You Have Other Medical Needs
Although it is primarily used for cosmetic purposes, Laser Lipo can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating.
Do I Have Other Body Contouring Options?
Over the past decade, contouring treatments that help patients address stubborn areas of the body have become more widely available. Because it directly removes fat cells from the body, Laser Lipo generally offers the best results.
But non-invasive treatments are also available that use heat, cold temperatures, and even radiofrequency energy to destroy fat cells, which are then naturally flushed from the body. Our practice offers TruSculpt 3D, which uses radiofrequency energy to kill off fat cells.
