I Love The Results of My Recent Photo Rejuvenation. How Often Do I Need to Repeat It?

If you've seen the amazing results of photo rejuvenation for yourself or heard your friends raving about it, you're probably wondering how it all works and how often you'll need treatments to keep that glow.

Photo rejuvenation treatments are effective at treating fine lines and dark spots, but what sets them apart from other treatments is their gentle approach—using intense pulsed light (IPL), they offer remarkable results without downtime.

To explain how photo rejuvenation works and how often you should get them, we consulted Dr. Pompeyo Chavez, our expert at Soulage Wellness & Aesthetic Center in Bastrop, Texas, who regularly performs these treatments, to share his expertise.

Photo rejuvenation: behind the scenes of effective skin treatments

The beauty industry is riddled with false promises and very little evidence; however, IPL, the technology behind photo rejuvenation treatments, has a long history and a clean record. It delivers on its promises, as suggested by a systematic review that analyzed 16 studies involving 637 people with different skin types and ages. The analysis suggests IPL effectively treats redness, fine lines, and dark spots.

So how do photo rejuvenation treatments improve your skin’s appearance?

The heat delivered by the laser energy onto the skin triggers a stress response, prompting the production of collagen and other growth factors to repair any potential damage caused by the heat.

Secondly, laser energy scatters pigment, meaning you’ll have any pigmentation go away on its own as soon as it's treated with a laser.

How often do I need to repeat the treatments?

The number of treatments you'll need can vary depending on what you're targeting, such as pigmentation issues or signs of aging.

Usually, it’s recommended to have at least three sessions, scheduled at 4-week intervals. However, in studies that examined its efficacy, the average number of treatments needed was about 4 or 5.

Over the 4-week window, your skin has plenty of time to regenerate and build new collagen, a process that is not immediate but is long-lasting.

To keep seeing good results, your best bet is to wear sunscreen, avoid excess sugar, and drink plenty of water. If you consume a lot of caffeine, it may also age you prematurely as caffeine in large amounts is dehydrating.
