Which Treatment Gets Rid of Brown Spots and Discoloration?

Which Treatment Gets Rid of Brown Spots and Discoloration?

If you’ve tried creams, serums, and everything in between, yet the brown spots or discolored patches remain, it’s understandable to feel defeated. However, not all treatments are the same.

Ready to get rid of pigmentation issues for good? Read on as our expert at Soulage Wellness & Aesthetic Center in Bastrop, Texas, Dr. Pompeyo Chavez, explains what causes these issues and outlines real solutions.

Treating brown spots and discoloration

Brown spots, often called age spots or sun spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation are typically caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. Your body produces more melanin as a defense mechanism against the harmful effects of sun exposure, which is why these sunspots appear most commonly on your face, hands and chest.

Other risk factors for developing pigmentation issues include hormonal changes, aging, and even certain medications.

Available treatments often focus on breaking down the melanin in the skin and stimulating collagen to encourage a healthier complexion.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels use acid solutions to remove damaged outer layers of skin. This controlled skin injury triggers the body's natural healing process, leading to the shedding of pigmented cells. The VI Peel™, a peel we use, contains a blend of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), retinoic acid, salicylic acid, and other ingredients to stimulate collagen and fade pigmentation.

Fractional laser resurfacing (CO2 and erbium)

Fractional laser resurfacing, using CO2 or erbium lasers, targets specific columns of skin while leaving surrounding areas intact. This approach promotes collagen production and is often used to treat pigmentation, sun damage and an uneven skin texture.

Dr. Chavez uses two types of lasers: CO2 lasers are more aggressive and suitable for deeper pigmentation and scarring, while erbium lasers are gentler and ideal for surface-level concerns like age spots and fine lines.

Both laser treatments work by creating microscopic wounds in the skin that stimulate the body's natural healing process, promote collagen production and break down uneven pigment.

Dermapen® (microneedling)

The Dermapen is a device that uses tiny needles to create micro wounds in your skin, stimulating collagen production and improving skin tone and texture. It is effective for age spots, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. Unlike microneedling with a roller, the Dermapen® is more precise, and the needle depth is carefully controlled, allowing for superior results.

Depending on the needle depth, the Dermapen® can break up melanin, stimulate collagen, and promote a clear and bright skin tone.
